Did you know there is a river in the bible called God’s “river of delights” that is continually available for us to drink? We don’t have to wait in line or rush to get there first, and we can drink from this river morning, noon and night…and as often as we desire, because it flows within us by the Holy Spirit.
[Psa 36:7-9 NLT] 7 How precious is your unfailing love, O God! All humanity finds shelter in the shadow of your wings. 8 You feed them from the abundance of your own house, letting them drink from your river of delights. 9 For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.
We see it revealed to us in the New Testament as well that out of a Jesus believing heart flow rivers of living water by the Holy Spirit:
[Jhn 7:38-39 ESV] 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'” 39 Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Through what I would call a “Holy Spirit rabbit trail,” I was out walking and it was in my thoughts of us drinking from “heaven’s mercy stream”… I followed the trail and it led me to Psalm 36:7 and God’s river of delights…This was wonderful, but there was something even more beautiful He revealed as He drew my attention to the word “delights.”
Read the scripture again, only this time personalized:
[Psa 36:7-9 NLT] 7 How precious is your unfailing love towards me, O God! I find shelter in the shadow of your wings. 8 You feed me from the abundance of your own house, you let me drink from your river of delights. 9 For you are the fountain of life, the light by which I see.
The word “delights” stood out to me to look up and I learned that the Hebrew word is “eden.” Does that sound familiar? It’s of course the name for the region of Adam and Eve’s home in the garden that God had made for them and called the Garden of Eden. We know that in the beginning the garden was perfect and encompassed every kind of provision of which Adam and Eve could ever have need. This Hebrew word means: delicate, delight, pleasure and luxury.
Each one of these words gives us a clear picture of God’s great love and desire for us to receive in abundance…He wants us to take delight in Him, to receive pleasure and luxury. We can all have a singular idea of something of delight and pleasure, but luxury is a word I believe we can all agree signifies in abundance. God has an abundance of delight for us…an abundance of pleasure for us…an abundance of love, an abundance of joy, an abundance of peace…
Meditating on this verse and seeing the river of God’s delight, Eden flowing from within us by the Holy Spirit is refreshing and powerful alone, but there was one more beautiful picture that also unfolds to us in looking at this word “delight.”
I pondered about the word delicate being one of the Hebrew meanings for the word delight…thinking it didn’t seem very synonymous to me…in my mind I only thought of delicate as being something fragile, which is certainly true…Yet, there is another meaning for delicate in the dictionary that says: very fine in texture or structure; of intricate workmanship or quality. I now understood how delicate could be used alongside God’s delight, pleasure and luxury for us…
I realized God’s love for us is so great, that He has ever so intricately — with great care and detail — with intricate workmanship and quality — personally prepared for us a place in Him that is full of every kind of delight, pleasure and luxury our hearts could want for.
God gave us His Holy Spirit so that we could drink of that river of delights (eden), 24/7 from the abundance of His own house as Psalm 36 says. God opens His house to us, invites us in, and leaves the door open…we have full access to Him and everything in His house. Now THAT’S something to rejoice about. 🙂
Whether we’re hungry or thirsty, tired or weak, challenged, confused, or just wanting some intimate fellowship time with our Father in heaven, we can freely come to Him and receive in abundance.
We see God’s desire to refresh us and sustain us with the supply from his own house mirrored also in Ephesians 1:23 when the scriptures speak of Jesus being the head over the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.
God desires that through Christ we be filled all in all…His love for us is so great and He never wants us to run dry or empty, so He has given us His Spirit and river of delights to drink from often.
Know God’s great love for you that compelled Him to so intricately make provisions for you. Drink deeply of His river of delights today and experience the refreshing and abundant provisions of eden full of God’s delight, pleasure, and luxury that He has so intricately prepared for you.
Father God, I thank you for your unfailing love towards me. I take shelter in your love. I thank you that your love protects me and feeds me out of the abundance you have prepared for me in your house. I receive through Christ and drink from your river of delights in the Holy Spirit. I take pleasure in you and in the luxury you provide me in your presence. By grace I receive the delight, pleasure and luxury you have so intricately prepared for me today, and I give thanks to you for loving me so deeply. In Jesus’ Name, I receive. Amen.
